An Ode to Makawao

Makawao.
Stick donuts from Komoda’s
Spinach gnocchi from Casanova’s.
The wild roosters wake you up at three a.m.,
But we still love them
(with lemon butter)

Getting to school on time is frustrating
Because of that darned left turn,
But crazy old Japanese ladies in red Hondas always stop for you.
On New Year’s Eve, plug your ears
And watch out for crazy cowboys carrying crackling firecrackers.
Magic Tree House, Junie B. Jones, Goosebumps and Sailor Moon
All sit beside brand new bound books
In the town library.
Makawao has everything you’ll ever need
But is so small it can be folded up
And put into your back pocket.
