Ode to an Old Land Cruiser

My family had an ancient, brown Land Cruiser.
We lived on Lana‘i, and the Land Cruiser got stuck
In the mud on the Munro Trail, then
Mom made us all get out so if the car fell off the cliff
We wouldn’t expire! But the Land Cruiser made it.

Lana‘i’s dry, red dirt got stuck
Inside all the Land Cruiser’s cracks.

Two of the windows would shut
Only if you slammed the door
Or hit the door with a hammer.

If Dad stopped suddenly or turned the car
Left or right, water would slosh loudly
Inside the driver’s door.
And we always said that, if we got stuck in the desert,
We’d never be thirsty.

The Land Cruiser had over 280,000 miles on it
When it stopped. It was the first American car
I ever rode in,
And I miss it.
